New job, new city, new house

Everytime I’ve made drastic changes to my life I think “this is definitely the last time”. It hasn’t been so far. I’m sure it has something to do with my Fernweh, but it must be something more. I feel like I’ve journeyed in search for something –or someone– to call home. And I do think I have found that someone.

About 1.5 years ago, my desperate search for a job came to and end, when I decided to give up my search for a job in the Helsinki region. I got a job at Wärtsilä in Vaasa, meaning I had to pull up roots and move for the 13th time in my life. I have done this almost every two years on average in my life. Let that sink in.

Now, all that uprooting happened during my single years, which, btw, was by choice. Having done all that, you probably know by now that I recently got married to my amazing wife. That was a huge step, and naturally had a knock-on effect on everything to come. This is where we are now, ready to both start new jobs, get an apartment, and move to Helsinki for the foreseeable future. Maybe, just maybe, this might be “the last time” for at least a while, who knows?

AI and robotics are at the forefront of technology, and I get to be part of this

Personally, I will be leaving behind a great job at the 185-year old company, Wärtsilä–one of the leading marine propulsion and energy business leaders in the world. During these 1.5 years, I have been responsible for engine safety automation systems. I’ve also been part of an enormous transformation involving completely turning the corporate structure on its head, by adopting SAFe Agile, which I and a few others pioneered within Automation & Control. For this reason, I was part of a historical global project, 185X Wärtsilä, where I and 184 others talked about our success stories–see mine here.

My next career journey will continue with vehicles, but this time autonomous, self-driving vehicles. This is very exciting to me, as AI and robotics are at the forefront of technology, and I get to be part of this. The company, Sensible 4, is located in Espoo, and I will be part of designing and building hardware for their autonomous vehicle projects. Unlike at Wärtsilä, this is a very small, fast-paced company, which is more up my alley.

Moving to Helsinki and searching for some permanence also means that my wife and I are looking to buy our first apartment together. This will also be the first owned apartment for both of us, as we have simply been too busy to buy something and stay in one place. We are aiming to change this, at least for the foreseeable future. Stay tuned for more on this!
